I felt today’s presentation when went very well for me. I was very happy with my final outcome and the level of work I achieved in such a small time, with our limited knowledge in this area of design. As far as a campaign project goes I feel there is some real potential for this prototype to be used in the near future. From the presentation I was glad to here some positive feedback and potential thoughts where this project may be headed in the near future. I was very satisfied as the presentation allowed me to see others genuinely excited about the project and to show Chris how we had developed since our last talk. I feel he was generally pleased and some of his feedback was extremely help in potential furthering the project.

From the presentation I did however feel that I may not have explained my project and intentions 100% clearly as I focused more on a semester summary as apposed to a project pitch. Because I took this approach I felt Soumitri was very excited about our prototype but others may have been left a little confused or disillusioned. As I was more concerned about getting a running model up and running ASAP I felt questions about designing for the future, the graphical layout and why may have been overlooked in relation to my intentions. However I did still find these comments very interesting and feel they were very constructive. It will be useful drawing on this feedback in the near future.

I’m absolutely stoked with our prototype and am pleased to see a base up there for anyone to get on board and begin being involved in the Locavore diet. I have never been involved with a live project and seeing a result that may potential change someone’s life style of benefit the community in some way is great. There is some real room for this design in society and hopefully Soumitri can find it in the future. I think that there may be a bit of room for a business plan or some form of management intervention.

From here I think I would like to sign off some portion of the project to Soumitri. I feel although I had a great time building the project to this level and am still greatly interested in the design and future potentials, I feel don’t have the time to commit 100% to this project. If I were to still be involved on some smaller level that would be ideally suited for me. (This will need to be discussed). This may be through consultation or just a slight cut of the profits it may generate if the project were to take this path. I have no idea if this is possible but I hope to soon find out. I really do think this project has a real future and would hate to see take off without me. But I would be more then pleased to see it develop through Soumitri as he really has the focus to make this happen.

(All of these options need to be discussed before a final decision is reached.)

Overall I had a great semester. It gave me the opportunity to learn and explore areas that I had very little experience with. Learning about a Locavore diet and everything involved with local food, farmers, producers and suppliers really opened my eyes, and will probably influence my personal eating choices for the rest of my life. It sounds corny but after conducting the research I personally began to learn that eating local doesn’t need to be too hard. The semester gave me the opportunity to explore design methods I had very little idea about and pitch to potential business partners. Exploring the area of interaction design was very useful as my project pitch for next year will be mainly interaction design based. I feel this was a strong introduction of what to expect next year. Although my partner pitch was unsuccessful it is an experience that I will draw upon for the rest of my career and hopefully an introduction for many to follow. Generally I found the semester challenging and as a result found my self wanting to participate for more then just schooling requirements. Overall I’m very pleased with our outcome at the end of the semester and would love to see my design one day take off and change the food world.

I would like to thank Soumitri for being very flexible and open to a flexible brief. This has allowed me to find my own way and gain a greater learning experience as a result.

Prototype Success!

Over the last week our prototype has been in the process of being scripted up to run the Google maps interface. This has gone extremely well with our fully complied database of the classes research up and running. Entries can now be searched, viewed and directions found. The user function is up and running along with the food forum blog. Our Project is really on track and will be usable for those interested in a Locavore diet by the end of the day.

Site Scripting Progress.

Over the last week we have had great success with getting a working prototype of the interactive search up and running in time. Due to the complexity of both mine and Steve’s sites we both came to a realization that it was impossible to get a full working prototype type up and running in the amount of time left. It was also extremely expensive. After chat with a couple of interested scripters through scriptlance.com I was quoted at least a couple of thousand to get a full social networking site up and running and about 2 months. This was assuming I could provided a graphics base. Steve was having a much similar problem with the e commerce aspect of his proposal. Through discussion we both concluded that we would merge teams and focus on getting the search able database aspect running. Both our sites have a Google maps feature that allows data to be searched and presented using Googles technology. It became our thinking that if we both worked on this part as a collaborative effort we could later take the prototype and further develop it either way for both mine and Steve’s proposals.

At the current time Steve has made a Joomla based engine running at http://www.ilovelocalfood.com/ This is just running off the back of his Creative Explosion Site has he has plenty of upload room left. Whilst Steve has been using his web skills to do this I have been sorting through the 300 or so database entries found by Jason, Steve, Olli, Shweta and myself. This data has been fully complied and broken up into the required categories so Steve’s Joomla engine can search it with ease… “HOPEFULLY”. I have also created a list of pictorial icons which will be used in the map interface. The site also has a user section where people can login and write posts on the food forum section. This is a slightly less technical version of the my proposals social networking ability.

The site is currently with the scripter and hopefully should be done in time for tuesdays presentation.

I’m still currently trying to find a scripter for my site. I tried obtaining a quote from steves contact but no reply as yet so I aim to try again tomorrow morning. As well as this steve also mentioned this site www.scriptlance.com it is a site for free lance scripters to find projects etc.  So i have posted my project in the urgent catagory and will hopefully gain some responses shortly. The site is a great idea as it allows for picture attachments and budget estimates etc. Check out my project post athttp://www.scriptlance.com/projects/1223794442.shtml

At the current im am trying to learn dreamweaver to get a HTML version of my site up and running so any scripting can be run in the background. I have very little to no idea so with steves help im trying to do what i can.

The Last Week and a Potential Maker for the Site

So over the last week I have been refining my proposal to a marketable stage. Working on the concept structure, graphics etc. As a plan B i am aim to get my proposal up to a sale able level so at a later date it may be potential given or sold to another party. This may happen by the end of the semester or the near future. For the time being i aim to submit my proposal in either the Elxtrolux design comp of the US interaction design comp.

Also in other news Steve has been able to find someone who maybe able to start constructing our sites for a small fee. He often gets scripting done for his web design business by a group in Malaysia for a very cheap price. Apparently he has good knowledge of facebook applications and google map technology. Over the next week we aim to contact him and get a full estimate on price. If we are able to construct the graphics base for the site he will be able to use our prototypes and graphics to piece together the site at a cheaper rate.

A Competition Possibility????

The below link describes and interaction design competition regarding sustainability design, local production and interaction design. I feel this is a perfect competition to get our designs out there. The following paragraph was taken directly from the site.

“Design an object, interface, system, or service intended to support the idea of utilizing or consuming local resources rather than global resources, in a sustainable and environmentally efficient manner. Use methods of ethnography and contextual research to understand the problem space, and develop user-centered design solutions to support, assist, enhance or otherwise benefit your target audience. Your solution could address the methods of production or transportation of local resources, or could focus on the consumptive and disposal processes; whatever the focus, however, the solution must clearly illustrate positive value to both local stakeholders and to the local environment in your respective region.” (Chi 2009, http://chi2009.org)

I have just had a quick look at the electolux design competition and it looks extremely relevant to our locavore project. All though the project doesn’t directly address food storage it does however address convenience, time and sustainability issues. I would be extremely interested in modifying my design to suit the competition. Ideally I will sleek up my design and really get it up to a level where the idea is a fully resolved and a fully marketable product. Regardless of how things pan out over the next week i intend to do the required work to submit an entry to this competition. It really does seem like a great opportunity.

So Where to Now… Thoughts and Week 8 Presentation

So from my user testing I have been thinking about the direction and where I would like to take my project now. It seems from the testing that the map and database aspect of the map is the key feature with the social networking aspect a key component to but at a later stage as the interest of the users grows. By the end of the semester I would some how like to have the map aspect of the resource up and running. If the social networking aspect were to happen that would be awesome but if not the proposal will be there for either me or someone else to pursue at a later date. I would like to initially make some money off the idea either by selling it to someone else or by small franchise payments. However I am not interested in massively commercializing the idea as I want to keep it free so that the sole objective of the resource wont be lost and it will stay easily accessible for those who use it. Ideally the resource will not need to be maintained it will just expand by itself.

I was pleased with the outcome of my presentation to Chris Ryan from the Victorian Eco Lab. I gained some positive feedback and some minor possibilities for improving the site. I was happy that he could see a real future use for my proposal.

So from here I guess I have to start finding people interested in helping to piece this resource together. As I said my goal is to get the map aspect up and running using our data collected in the first 4 weeks of our semester. Chris mentioned that there would be any number of students coming out of RMIT and Melbourne Uni interested in following up this proposal so now I guess I have to look at getting the idea out there and hope that some will come on board to make this happen. Over the next week I will be posting with my findings.
